While traveling, you’re probably posting pictures of yourself running on the beach, learning to surf, plane hopping, and partying with all your new friends. The trouble with being a backpacker is that everyone only gets to see the good stuff. You’re not going to post a photo of yourself eating dinner alone in the hostel, or your reaction when you realize you’ve been pickpocketed.
It’s important to make sure you’re okay and taking care of yourself while you’re on your own, having all these amazing—yet often testing—experiences. Sometimes you just need to get away and clear your head. It’s important to always listen to yourself and take a break to make sure you’re happy and healthy.
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Week, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best mind-clearing activities. Trying just one of these can help put things into perspective—something we often need when we’re being hit with a sensory overload on the regular while traveling.
1. Scenic Flight Over the Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living thing on Earth. When you stop and really take in what you’re seeing—and how lucky you are to be traveling, living, and experiencing things most can only dream of—you’ll feel deeply grateful. Not to say you aren’t already, but it’s easy to forget the bigger picture when things go wrong.
2. Onsen Hot Pools
Sometimes clearing your mind means pampering yourself a little. If you’re lucky enough to snag a booking here, you’ll be transported into a world of relaxation as you soak in your own private hot pool with a view into the Shotover Canyon. Go at night to stargaze—Queenstown’s remoteness offers incredible night skies.
3. Waitomo Glowworm Caves
There’s something grounding about entering endless black caves lit only by the tiny glow of worms. The calming darkness is the perfect place to focus your mind and reconnect with the awe of nature.
4. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway
When you’re feeling lost, the only way to go is up. Ride the Skyrail Cableway in Cairns for a once-in-a-lifetime panoramic view of the rainforest. As you ascend, reflect on why you started traveling in the first place—and what’s really going to matter to you a year from now.
5. Uluru
Take a trek into the desert to witness one of Australia’s greatest natural wonders. Uluru is a massive sandstone rock in the heart of the Red Centre. Head there at sunrise and watch it glow fiery red as the sun rises. Bring a journal or a good book, find a quiet place, and reflect.
6. Rice Fields in Bali
The best time to visit is during daylight hours around March when the fields are lush and glistening. These endless stretches of green are breathtaking. Wander through the peaceful paths, speak with locals, and soak in the slower rhythm of life.
7. Rottnest Island
Just off the coast of Perth, this little limestone island is dotted with white sand beaches and shallow turquoise waters. It’s home to rare wildlife and only around 100 inhabitants. Solitude can feel intimidating, but it can also be exactly what you need. Find a quiet beach or paddle out on your own and recharge.
8. Kawarau Bridge Bungy
There’s something about the opaque turquoise Kawarau River that’s both calming and exhilarating. Imagine all the worries and awkward moments you’ve been beating yourself up over—and let them go with the jump. Use it as your personal ritual to reset.
Just because you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel doesn’t mean it’s not there. Most people won’t openly talk about mental health—especially not with someone they’ve just met. But one honest conversation could be everything to someone who’s feeling alone.
Traveling can be lonely, and that’s why we backpackers need to look out for each other. Sometimes the biggest risk you’ll take on the road isn’t skydiving or bungee jumping—it’s letting someone see your vulnerable side. And that might just be the thing that helps you feel more connected, grounded, and happy along the way.
