When it comes to hospitality, the country of Qatar really knows what it’s doing. After being named one of the top five airlines in the world by multiple publications, Qatar Airways was high on my list. But if I was going to do it, I wanted to do it right—so I booked a seat in their highly rated business class.
The Airport Experience
The journey began at check-in, where we were guided to a private desk lined with Qatar Airways’ signature burgundy carpet, roped off for business and first-class passengers. The attendant handed us fast-track security passes (valid for each flight), along with lounge access passes. Since we were traveling for over 25 hours with two layovers, we got to experience multiple lounges along the way.
The Lounge – Doha
Qatar Airways’ main lounge is in Doha, where most of its international layovers happen. With a 5-hour layover, we had plenty of time to explore it.
The two-story lounge featured modern architecture, polished stone, silver finishes, and a stunning centerpiece fountain with artificial rain falling from the ceiling. Upstairs, we found a full buffet and bar with table service. Middle Eastern cuisine, fresh omelets, and yogurt were just some of the options—all complimentary, so there was no need to exchange money during our layover.
Downstairs featured more seating and bathrooms, including floor-to-ceiling private shower suites with ensuite washrooms, fully stocked with toiletries and towels. Other amenities included a dessert bar, coffee lounge, smoking room, recliner chairs, and free Wi-Fi.
The Plane
Business class passengers board first, via a private jet bridge leading to the top deck of the plane. Economy boarding was on the lower level. As I stepped on board, I was greeted with a glass of champagne (in a real glass flute) and a full walk-through by a flight attendant.
My seat came with:
- Two personal storage cubbies
- A private overhead bin
- Coat check service
- Two windows with automatic shades
- A large entertainment system with movies, shows, maps, and games
- Plenty of table space
Later, the flight attendants offered turn-down service, setting up a mattress, sheet, and duvet so the seat became a true flat-bed. I also received a welcome amenity kit by luxury luggage brand BRICS, filled with skincare products by Castello Monte Vibiano Vecchio. Inside were an eye mask, earplugs, face mist, lip balm, lotion, socks, and even pajamas.
For the first time ever, I actually slept on a plane for more than an hour. After waking up (midway through a 13-hour flight), I wandered around—and discovered something I hadn’t even realized was there: a hidden onboard bar and lounge.
Tucked behind a curtain, past the bathrooms, was a full cocktail bar with leather couches, snacks, and panoramic windows—a perfect place to stretch out and relax mid-flight.

The Food
Food was available on demand, not at fixed times. I was given a six-page menu featuring breakfast, dinner, snacks, and drinks—everything from omelets and steaks to cheese platters and fresh juices.
Once I ordered, the attendant laid a white tablecloth over my tray table and set it with real silverware, ceramic dishes, and my own salt and pepper shakers.
I tried the gluten-free meal first—not my favorite. I then ordered the steak and potatoes, which was much better, though not mind-blowing. They say food tastes different at altitude… maybe that’s true. Still, it was far better than economy meals and the setup made it feel luxurious.
The Bathroom
While not massive, the bathrooms were beautifully designed. The toilet seats had thick leather cushions, the sink was marble-style, there was a full-length mirror, and every toiletry you could want was available: toothbrushes, lotions, face wipes—you name it.
The vanity lighting made it a great space to freshen up. I even stayed in there for a bit to do my hair and makeup, mostly because I was bored—but also because it was hands-down the nicest airplane bathroom I’ve ever been in.
Final Thoughts
It would be an understatement to say Qatar Airways goes above and beyond for its business class passengers. The entire experience was thoughtful, elegant, and seamless from start to finish. I signed up for their rewards program as soon as I got home—especially since you earn a large number of points when booking a business class seat, and membership is free.
I was seated at the front of the business class cabin, close to first class, and honestly couldn’t tell where the separation was. I guess I’ll just have to try first class someday to compare!
